Adams County (population 87,697) was created on January 22, 1800, from part of
York County and was named in honor of President John Adams. It is located in
South Central Pennsylvania on the famous Mason-Dixon line, the historic border
line between "north" and "south". Adams County was also the home of General
Dwight D. Eisenhower, our nation's 34th president. The only home he ever owned
was located in on a farm in Adams County.
Had history been different, that is all this quiet, quaint Pennsylvania county
would have been known for. However, on June 30, 1863 a battle took place that
would change the history of the world -
The Battle of Gettysburg. Gettysburg (population 7,000) is the county
seat and was named for James Gettys, a local landowner.
